Lifetime planning · 3-hour default

Match the inbox window to your testing timeline

A temporary address should not last forever. Leave room for delays and extend it when needed, but keep the total window within 24 hours.

Within 15 minutes

One-off verification codes and signup smoke tests. The default 3 hours provides ample buffer.

1–3 hours

Template checks and short regression tests. Keep the current address and record when each sample was triggered.

3–8 hours

Cross-team integration or delayed-delivery monitoring. Extend the address before it expires—do not wait until the countdown is nearly over.

More than 24 hours

This is ongoing communication. Use a long-term, controlled mailbox or a dedicated forwarding alias instead.

Choose a window for the task

Estimate: execution time + possible delay + one review. If the result exceeds 24 hours, do not rely on a temporary address.

Task Execution Buffer Recommendation
Verification smoke test 10–20 minutes 30 minutes Default 3 hours
HTML template regression 1–2 hours 1 hour Default window is enough
Cross-time-zone integration 4–8 hours 2 hours Extend in advance
Next-day notification monitoring More than 24 hours Uncontrollable Use a forwarding alias

Why is the default window 3 hours?

It covers most signups, verification codes, and template reviews while limiting how long test content remains exposed. A short window also encourages teams to verify and clean up in one session.

The countdown shows how long the address remains available—not how long a specific verification code remains valid. A code may expire after just 5 or 10 minutes.

When should you extend it?

Extend the address while it is still active if delivery queues are delayed, several teams are integrating in sequence, or you need to review the HTML. Confirm the task will continue before adding time.

Extending the address does not extend a verification code's validity or fix errors in the sending system. It only keeps the current inbox available to receive messages.

When should you switch addresses?

Start with a clean address for a new, independent test cycle, when samples become mixed together, or if the address was exposed accidentally. After switching, update the recipient address in the sending interface.

Do not continue using the old address as a testing reference. Record when you switched between the old and new addresses to avoid mistaking old samples for new results.

What happens when it expires?

After expiration, the address is no longer a reliable receiving path, and the page will ask you to create a new one. Browser-token access also ends, so record important results while the window is active.

Do not assume an expired address can be recovered later. Even if the same string appears again, that does not mean previous messages can be restored.

Why is the limit 24 hours?

Short-term isolation is at the heart of a disposable service. Unlimited extensions could make users treat it like a permanent account entry point and increase the risk of exposure or failed recovery.

If a task spans a full day, it usually involves notifications, billing, or an ongoing relationship. A dedicated alias is more suitable than a temporary email when recoverability matters.

How should teams hand off a task?

During handoff, record the address purpose, time remaining, samples received, and the next owner's checklist. Never share a complete access token in a public chat.

If the next person cannot process the inbox before it expires, create a long-term test mailbox controlled by your organization instead of repeatedly extending the temporary window.

Before expiration

  • Confirm that the remaining time covers the final send
  • Save essential subjects, timestamps, and screenshots
  • Delete sensitive samples you no longer need
  • Extend early if the task must continue

Do not rely on

  • Recovering the original address after expiration
  • Using a temporary address to recover an important account
  • Extending the address to extend a verification code
  • Automatically recovering the token after clearing the browser

For short tasks, create a 3-hour test inbox. If the task may run overnight, open Manage receiving routes and use a pausable alias.
